Working with International Clients in Hunan

Companies operating in Hunan from abroad rarely arrive with a clean legal question. More often it is a situation already in motion — a senior appointment that is no longer working as intended, a local partner behaving in unexpected ways, a regulator asking questions no one anticipated. What they need is not a recital of the applicable statutes but a read on how the matter is likely to unfold in this province, and what a sensible next step actually looks like.

Working effectively here depends as much on local knowledge as on the law: how regulatory and commercial processes operate in practice, which risks require immediate attention, and what options remain realistically available. Equally important is carrying that judgment back to an overseas board or general counsel in terms they can act on, without losing the nuance. I work in English with foreign executives and their advisers, coordinate with in-house and overseas legal teams, and aim to leave decision-makers with clarity rather than caveats.

I serve as Deputy Director of the International Practice Committee of the Hunan Lawyers Association (since 2020) and was selected to the Ministry of Justice's national roster of lawyers in foreign-related legal practice (2019).
